Heart Medications

HAVE YOU BEEN HARMED BY A HEART DISEASE MEDICATION?

The heart is a complicated organ, and there are many diseases and disorders that can affect the heart. These conditions can drastically affect a person’s quality of life. Medications are prescribed to help treat or manage the symptoms of these conditions. Common heart conditions include:

  • Arrhythmia
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart valve problems
  • Pericarditis
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Stroke
  • Venous thromboembolism

DANGERS ASSOCIATED WITH HEART DISEASE MEDICATIONS

Unfortunately, heart disease drugs oftentimes cause additional, severe problems for patients. Heart disease medications have been linked to dangerous, life-threatening side effects. Dangerous drugs can cause more severe problems than they were intended to treat.

  • Multaq (dronedarone) — An antiarrhythmic drug prescribed to reduce the risk of hospitalization in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter. Multaq has been linked to an increased risk of heart failure, liver failure, and hypokalemia.
  • Statins (such as Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor) — Statins are a class of drug that lowers the cholesterol in the blood by reducing production in the liver. They are often prescribed to treat atherosclerosis. Statins have been linked to muscle tissue death, serious liver damage, kidney failure, and onset of diabetes.
  • Anticoagulants (warfarin) — These drugs, also referred to as blood thinners, help prevent blood clots and is prescribed to treat various heart conditions. Anticoagulants, such as Pradaxa and Coumadin, contain a black box warning for a bleeding risk. A 2012 report from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices revealed that anticoagulants were the most frequent type of drug tied to serious, disabling, and fatal injuries in 2011.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, killing approximately 610,000 people each year. People suffering from these conditions look to prescription medications to help treat, manage, or cure their ailments. Sadly, medications that are prescribed to heal instead cause additional severe illnesses and injuries — or even death. Pharmaceutical companies fail to provide adequate warnings of the risks associated with their drugs. When patients are injured as a result, drug companies need to be brought to justice.

Thomas J. Henry Injury Attorneys has the resources and experience necessary to take on pharmaceutical giants from across the world. If you or a loved one has been injured after taking a heart medication, contact our experienced dangerous drug lawyers for a free legal consultation.
