ZOCOR, STATIN CHOLESTEROL DRUGS LINKED TO HARMFUL SIDE EFFECTS

Zocor (simvastatin) is a pharmaceutical drug prescribed to lower cholesterol levels in patients, decreasing their risk of a stroke, heart attack, and atherosclerosis. Zocor falls within the statin class of drugs that work by inhibiting a liver enzyme from creating cholesterol. Developed by Merck and released to the market in 1992, simvastatin is on the World Health Organization’s list of Essential Medicines.

Common side effects of Zocor may include:

  • Headache
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Sore throat
  • Insomnia
  • Skin rash

Despite being on the list of the most effective and safe medicines, the cholesterol drug has been found to cause significant adverse health conditions.

FDA WARNS OF SEVERE HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH ZOCOR, STATINS

In 2012, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an update on cholesterol-lowering statin drugs like Zocor. In the warning, the FDA issued a statement regarding several adverse reactions, including:

  • Liver injury
  • Memory loss
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Myopathy

In addition, the FDA says Zocor should not be taken while pregnant and if pregnancy occurs, Zocor treatment should cease immediately. Women taking simvastatin are at risk of having children with severe birth defects. Breastfeeding while taking Zocor can also cause damage to newborn children.

HIGH DOSAGE OF ZOCOR INCREASES RISK OF MYOPATHY

In 2011, the FDA issued a recommendation regarding the dosage of Zocor given to patients within the first year of taking the drug. The approved 80mg dosage of simvastatin has been shown to increase the risk of developing muscle injury (myopathy) more than lower doses. Signs of myopathy include:

  • Muscle pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Elevation of creatine kinase in the blood

A severe form of myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, can also occur when taking statins like Zocor. Rhabdomyolysis is when a muscle injury releases a substance into the blood that could cause serious kidney damage or kidney failure. Although developing this condition is rare while taking simvastatin, it can prove to be fatal.

Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include:

  • Decreased urine output
  • General weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Seizures
  • Muscle tenderness
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Weight gain
  • Dark or red urine

ZOCOR MAY INCREASE RISK OF SERIOUS LIVER INJURY

Statins, like Zocor, have been shown to increase the risk of liver damage. The FDA recommends that a liver function test is given prior to starting a Zocor treatment. There have been reports of patients suffering from fatal and non-fatal liver failure after taking statins. Signs and symptoms that a liver injury has occurred when taking Zocor include:

  • Fatigue
  • Anorexia
  • Right upper abdominal discomfort
  • Dark urine
  • Jaundice
