Topical Acne Medications

INJURED BY AN OVER-THE-COUNTER ACNE MEDICATION?

There are many topical medications available over-the-counter to help treat moderate acne. These medications come in a variety of applications, including gels, lotions, pads, and full treatment systems. Skin medications work in different ways and affect people differently as well. The active ingredient in the drugs may include:

  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Salicylic acid
  • Alpha hydroxy acids
  • Sulfur

Most acne medications have common, minor side effects that generally resolve. Unfortunately, some of these drugs have been linked to more serious side effects that may be life-threatening.

BENZOYL PEROXIDE AND SALICYLIC ACID CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ALLERGIC REACTION

Two popular ingredients found in many acne medications are benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), these ingredients may, in rare instances, cause severe allergic reactions that could cause death.

In 2014, the FDA issued a warning that the two ingredients can cause allergic reactions or severe irritation. However, these warnings are not included on the product labels containing these dangerous drugs. The FDA says that these OTC skin medications warn of less harmful irritations on the label, including:

  • Burning
  • Dryness
  • Itching
  • Peeling
  • Redness
  • Slight swelling

Between 1969 and 2013, the agency received 131 reports from consumers and manufacturers of allergic and hypersensitivity reactions with benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid acne medications. In addition, many of the adverse events occurred within 24 hours of applying the medication. Forty percent of the reports described severe allergy symptoms, including throat tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing, low blood pressure, and fainting.

According to the FDA, it is not exactly clear if these reactions are due to the active ingredients, inactive ingredients, or the combination between them. Forty-four percent of the cases reported to the FDA required hospitalization.
