Ikea Dresser Recall

REPRESENTING VICTIMS OF DANGEROUS IKEA DRESSERS

In June 2016, Ikea issued a recall for 29 million dressers and chests in its MALM furniture series. Several million dressers and chests were also recalled in Canada. Reports indicate that Ikea dressers, including those in the MALM series, have been linked to at least eight deaths since 1989.

EIGHT CHILD DEATHS LINKED TO RECALLED IKEA DRESSERS

So far, eight deaths have been linked to the recalled IKEA dressers. Two children died in separate incidents in 2014 due to a chest falling on top of them. In 2015, a third child was killed in a similar tragedy. All of the children who passed away due to these incidents were under the age of four. Following the third reported child fatality, Ikea issued the widespread voluntary recall on its MALM series dressers and chests.

The most recent death occurred in May 2017 when a recalled dresser tipped over fatally crushing a California toddler. The event raised concerns about the effectiveness of IKEA’s recall campaign.

Both Ikea and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated that at least 36 children have been injured by the recalled products, which are prone to tip over when they are not anchored to a wall. In every fatal tip-over case, the furniture was not anchored to a wall.

In December 2016, Ikea reached a settlement with the families of the three children killed by dresser tip-over accidents. The $50 million settlement was reportedly split between the three plaintiffs. In addition, Ikea donated more than $250,000 toward children’s hospitals and safety organizations.
