GM Chevrolet HHR Recall

GM Recalls All 2006-2011 Chevy HHR Vehicles

Thomas J. Henry is investigating reports of wrongful death, injury and diminution of value in connection to General Motor’s Chevrolet HHR recall.

In February of 2014, GM announced that it was recalling more than 1.65 million vehicles, including 213,583 Chevrolet HHRs, after determining that the vehicles were equipped with defective ignition switches.

On March 28, GM extended that recall to cover another 971,000 vehicles.

According to the company, the faulty switches can shift out of the “run” position and into the “off” or “accessory” positions, cutting power to the engine. This can result in the loss of multiple safety features and may even prevent airbags from deploying during a collision.

GM has linked multiple collisions and fatalities to the manufacturing flaw.

DETAILS OF THE CHEVROLET HHR RECALL

  • Year models affected by the Chevrolet HHR recall are 2006-2011
  • General Motors reports that jolting events, rough terrain, and heavy key rings could all cause the ignition switch to shift out fo the “run” position.
  • The automaker claims that a total of 13 deaths and 54 collisions have been attributed the ignition switch recall; however, the Center for Auto Safety alleges the number of fatalities is much higher, claiming that it has linked 303 deaths to airbag failures in the recalled vehicles.
GM UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR RECALL DELAYS
  • The U.S. Department of Justice, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the House Energy and Commerce Committee have all launched ind investigations into General Motors’ handling of the recall.
  • Investigations have revealed that GM was aware of problems with the ignition switch as early as 2001.
  • Nonetheless, the automaker failed to take appropriate actions for more a decade, stating recommended fixes were deemed too costly. Some were reported to cost as little as $1 per vehicle.
  • General Motors finally began recalling vehicles with the defective switches on February 13, 2014, but it was not until two weeks later that the company opted to add the HHR to that list.
