Prescriptions Offered Over-the-Counter?
The FDA is considering making many popular prescription drugs (like those used to treat diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure) available over-the-counter in an effort to make these life-saving medications more widely accessible.
Patients Could Self-Diagnose at the Pharmacy
If this proposal becomes a rule, instead of going to a doctor’s office patients could go straight to the pharmacy and use touch-screen kiosks to diagnose themselves with common ailments such as asthma and migraines.
In some cases, patients would need to obtain an initial prescription from a physician before getting over-the-counter refills, but the move could potentially relieve the over-burdened healthcare industry, freeing doctors to concentrate on seriously ill patients.
FDA regulators emphasize that this proposal is still in the early stages; a public meeting will be held later this month to gather feedback.
