Propane Tanker Causes Evacuations in WV

Hazmat crews are working at the scene of an accident involving a tanker truck that was carrying propane.

Details about the Tanker Truck Accident

According to WTRF News in Littleton, West Virginia State Police have confirmed that a tanker truck carrying propane has rolled over on Route 250 in Wetzel County, near Littleton.

Hazmat crews have responded to the scene of the accident, and residents within a half-mile of the accident in every direction are being evacuated as a precaution.

According to State Police, the tank on the vehicle was compromised and is slowly leaking propane. Another tanker is being brought in to remove as much of the propane as possible from the tanker that has turned over.

The accident reportedly happened around 10 a.m. Thursday morning. Police are currently saying that they believe the accident happened when the wheels on the bus hit a soft patch on the side of the interstate.

According to the National Propane Gas Association:

  • Two types of trucks are used to transport propane: a highway transport that can carry 7,000-12,000 gallons, and a smaller bulk delivery truck that can carry anywhere from 1,000-5,000 gallons of propane gas.
  • The transportation network also include, barges, tanker, bobtails, railroad tank cars, and a pipeline system.
  • Tankers are equipped with bright reflectors to help other drivers notice them on the roadways.
