A woman is dead after being struck by a Queens MTA Bus Monday evening.

About the MTA Pedestrian Accident

According to CBS New York, the Q53 bus traveling on 74th Street and Broadway in Elmhurst around 6p.m., when it struck and killed a pedestrian. Thirty passengers were aboard the bus, but no one was hurt.

Pedestrian fatalities are increasing and have been a major concern for Mayor Bill de Blasio, who recently took office.

The fatal accident marked the second death of the day. It was only earlier in the day a backhoe was clearing up snow in Brighton Beach when it backed up, and killed a 73-year-old man.

New York City to Enact Stricter Laws

  • It was last month that Bill de Blasio initiated “Vision Zero” – a task force created to help eliminate deadly traffic accidents.
  • The city is cracking down with stricter enforcement for laws involving hazards to pedestrians.
  • Police say a similar accident occurred on Jan. 19, when an MTA bus struck and killed a 45-year-old bicyclist.

  • Nearly one in every five children between ages 5-9 killed in a traffic accident is a pedestrian.
