Questions Remain in Fatal Trucking Accident

Morgan Cain2 years ago

Questions still linger over a fatal Interstate 55 crash last month that involved an 18-wheeler and several vehicles in a construction zone in Elwood, Illinois.

About the Accident

According to ABC 7 Eyewitness News, five people were killed when Francisco Espinal-Quiroz abruptly changed lanes and hit several vehicles stopped in a construction zone.

The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on July 21 near Arsenal Road.

Espinal-Quiroz was allegedly speeding in a construction zone and his last minute decision to change lanes caused him to hit several cars ahead of him without applying his breaks.

Questions Regarding the Crash

Francisco Espinal-Quiroz has been charged with several felonies primarily concerning fraudulent driver log books rather than the crash itself.

According to ABC 7 Eyewitness News, Espinal-Quiroz has limited eye sight in one eye.  This doesn’t stop him from driving trucks, but he must have a variance on his commercial driver’s license which was not current on his.

It has been suggested that he was found not wearing his glasses and that this could be a cause of the accident, but it has not yet been confirmed.

Francisco Espinal-Quiroz entered a not guilty plea that he failed to keep a log book and that the hours posted on the day of the accident were incorrect.  He is due back in court on September 9.
