The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has determined that the Bronx, New York bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 people last year was caused by bad highway design, driver fatigue, and excessive speed.

Bus Crash Killed 15 People

On March 12, 2011, a bus full of Casino-goers crashed in the Bronx.  According to the New York Post, the bus was travelling 78 miles per hour when it tipped over on its side, slid into a nearby road sign, and was sliced in half.  15 passengers died in the accident and more than a dozen more were injured.

Driver Error and Bad Roadway Design to Blame

  • Speed– The driver was travelling 78 mph on a stretch of highway with a 50 mph limit.
  • Driver Fatigue– The driver was reportedly accustomed to working night shifts, but had recently reverted to a daytime schedule on his days off.
  • Improper Driver Screening– NTSB blamed the bus company (World Wide Travel) for not properly screening its employees- the driver was an ex-con with 18 license suspensions.
  • Bad Highway Design- The sign post that the bus hit was placed too close to the roadway.
Driver Charged, Bus Company Shut Down

As a result of this accident, World Wide Travel was placed out of business. In addition, Newsday reports that the bus driver has been charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.
