Risk of Strap Failure leads to Child Safety Seat Recall

Justin Chavez3 years ago

About 33,000 child safety seats are being recalled by Combi USA because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the straps could break during a crash.

About the Safety Strap Recall

The agency originally detected strap failures during a spot check test in 2012 when they were measuring the strength of the straps. After the straps failed the testing, the NHTSA contacted Combi about issuing a recall. Combi then filed a petition requesting that the seats be excused from the recall.

The company argued that no strap failure had occurred during their own testing and that the straps were strong enough that “under no circumstances” would there be a failure in a real-world crash. The agency rejected the Combi's arguments in late November and again handed down its mandate for recall.
