Risks of Regular Aspirin Use May Outweigh Benefits

According to a recent study, taking aspirin regularly to prevent heart disease may bring about more harm than good.

Study Analyzes Aspirin as Preventive Treatment

“Too many healthy people think that aspirin will prevent heart attacks and cancer.” – Dr. Peter Sandercock of the Centre of Clinical Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland as published by FOX News

It has long been speculated that taking aspirin regularly could help reduce the risk of suffering from heart disease, heart attack and cancer, but a UK study may end the speculation once and for all.

Researchers in the United Kingdom analyzed 27 studies conducted between 2008 and 2012 analyzing what effects regular aspirin use has on the human body.

All studies were based on research gather by nine randomized controlled studies.

Findings of the Aspirin Study

Researchers found that while regular aspiring use did prevent 33 to 46 deaths in 10,000 people over a 10 year period, it also lead to 46 to 49 major bleeds and 68 to 117 gastrointestinal bleeds.

According to the researchers, this means that regular aspirin use results in 37 percent increased risk of stomach bleeding and a 38 percent increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

While researchers did acknowledge that regular use may be effective in patients who have had a minor stroke in the past (those patients run a 15 percent chance of experiencing another stroke) the benefits do not outweigh the risks when taken by an otherwise healthy adult.
