Emma D'Arpino5 months ago

NBC New York is reporting that a robbery suspect crashed into another car while fleeing from police, killing a woman and causing a multiple vehicle accident.

Details about the Fatal Accident

On Thursday, Derrick Perkins, who, according to police, is on parole for murder and has 10 priors, crashed his BMW into 78-year-old Roxina Clayton’s vehicle. The accident occurred near Linden Boulevard and 225th Street in Cambria Heights as Perkins was being chased by an undercover police car after he allegedly stole a phone from an auto body shop worker.

The surveillance video obtained by NBC 4 New York shows Perkins pull up near the body shop and get out of his car. According to the body shop owner, Perkins then approached a worker sitting outside the shop, and Perkins asked the worker if he wanted to buy his watch for $50. When the worker declined Perkins’ offer, Perkins allegedly took the worker’s phone out of his hand and told the worker not to follow him. Perkins then got in his car and left the scene.

After the alleged robbery, Perkins crashed into Clayton’s car while trying to escape the police. Perkins was taken into custody at the scene of the accident.

Important Information about Police Car Chases

According to an article found in USA Today, there are thousands of wrongful deaths of people who have been killed in accidents involving police car chases:

  • Since 1979, more than 5,000 bystanders and passengers have been killed in police car chases.
  • The bystanders and the passengers in chased cars account for nearly half of all people killed in police pursuits from 1979 through 2013, with a majority of the bystanders getting killed in their own cars by a fleeing driver.
  • Police across the country chase tens of thousands of people each year, usually for traffic violations or misdemeanors, often causing drivers to speed away recklessly.
