A San Antonio, Texas man is facing charges of reckless endangerment for a 2009 distracted driving accident which resulted in the deaths of two bicyclists.

On August 29, 2012, jurors in the144th state District Court sat to watch as proceedings began in the trial of Gilbert John Sullaway Jr., a man accused of causing the deaths of Gregory and Alexandra Bruehler.

Details of the Bicycle Accident

  • According to the San Antonio Express News, the wreck occurred west of Loop 1604 when Sullaway’s vehicle drifted onto the shoulder and collided with the Bruehler’s tandem bicycle.
  • Both Gregory and Alexandra Bruehler died in the bicycle accident.
  • The driver (Sullaway) reportedly told police that he lost control of his vehicle while looking at a new fire station.
  • Sullaway was not immediately arrested on the scene, and was not indicted until a year after the incident occurred.

Speed and Distracted Driving Contributed to Accident

  • The defense has stated that Sullaway had only looked away from the road for a very brief amount of time to observe the new District 7 Fire Station, no more than a few seconds.
  • Witnesses testified that they were startled at the speed with which Sullaway passed them on the highway.
  • Experts estimate that Sullaway’s vehicle was traveling at about 79 miles per hour, on the 65-mph highway.
  • More details are expected to emerge as the trial goes on.
