Safety Agencies Remind Motorists to have a Safe Holiday Season

Destiny Baker3 years ago

With nearly 95 million Americans traveling long distances to visit friends and family and a fair amount of celebrating to be done, national and state safety agencies are reminding motorists to drive safe and be responsible this holiday season.

National Holiday Traffic Accident Statistics

  • On average, more than 250 Americans die and another 27,900 are injured in automobile accidents during the end-of-year holiday season.
  • From the afternoon of Christmas Eve through the end of Christmas Day, the National Safety Council estimates that traffic accidents will account for 105 deaths and 11,200 severe injuries.
  • Further, the NSC estimates that 38 percent of these deaths would have been prevented had the passengers been wearing a seatbelt.
  • The numbers for New Year’s even more alarming with an estimated 156 American projected to die with 57 of the deaths being preventable by seatbelts.

Drunk Driving During the Holidays

  • Between 2007 and 2011, alcohol was a factor in 42 percent of all fatal New Year’s traffic collisions and 35 percent of fatal Christmas traffic accidents.
  • Last year alone, Texas recorded 78 drunk driving fatalities and 776 DWI accidents between December 1, 2012 and January 1, 2013 – up 21.8 percent from the previous year.
  • In an effort to prevent drunk driving accidents, the Texas Department of Transportation will once again partner with law enforcement across Texas, increasing patrols and implementing no-refusal programs.
