Safety Tips – Staying Safe in School Zones

Alexandrea Messner1 year ago

With the new school year underway, it is important to remember school zone safety. Many children will be making their way to schools on foot, and we need to make sure that we take every precaution to protect them from distracted drivers.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 236 children were killed in 2013 due to pedestrian accidents.

Another study conducted by Safe Kids USA in 2009 showed that one in six drivers in a school zone is distracted. When you think about the amount of children that walk through school zones on a daily basis, this is a frightening statistic.

The ways a driver can be distracted are seemingly endless. Some examples of distractions include phones, being under the influence of a substance, and drowsiness to name a few.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

Here are some helpful tips for pedestrians and drivers to make sure that everyone remains safe:

  • Always look both ways before crossing the street, even if you see a “walk” signal.
  • Keep an eye out for others: stop fellow pedestrians if you see them about to enter a dangerous situation.
  • Never assume that a vehicle is going to stop, wait for the car to come to a complete stop before crossing.
  • For drivers, always assume that a pedestrian is present and drive cautiously.
  • Be sure to put down all phones and distractions and be on high alert when driving through a school zone.
