The federal government has had to recall 30 of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in order to deal with a Salmonella outbreak that has affected 18 states.

Salmonella and the Government Shutdown

Poultry products distributed primarily in Oregon, California, and Washington have been identified as a link to a recent outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg.  Of 18 states that have been affected, 278 illnesses have been reported according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service. Approximately 42 percent of those infected have required hosptialization.

The likely source, according to CNN, is Foster Farms plants based in central California, which have labeled the following codes on packaging: P6137, P6137A, and P7632. Though Foster Farms has not recalled the products yet, many food chains are pulling the chicken from the shelves.

With the CDC previously running at 32 percent due to the government shutdown, the federal goverment had to recall 30 furloughed staff members to help deal with the outbreak.

Effects of Salmonella Poisoning

  • Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps vomiting, chills, muscle pains and headaches 12 to 72 hours after ingestion.
  • In healthy adults, symptoms may last 4 to 7 days, however there is a risk of the infection spreading beyond the bloodstream and causing death if there is no treatment with antibiotics. Risks are significantly higher in children.
  • Salmonella is the top cause of foodborne illness according to the Center for Disease Control with over 48 million people contracting food poisoning yearly.
  • Consumers are recommended to cook chicken products at a heat of over 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill off bacteria.
