San Antonio Driver Killed in Crash with Tractor-Trailer

Authorities are investigating a fatal accident that happened early Thursday morning along southbound I-35 in San Antonio, according to KSAT News. The driver of a small car was killed after his vehicle rear-ended an eighteen-wheeler.

Details of the Fatal Crash

The accident happened at approximately 1:30 a.m. on southbound I-35 between Walzem and Eisenhauer roads. Reports say the driver of the tractor-trailer had slowed down due to construction and lane closures. The driver of a smaller car failed to slow down and rear-ended the truck.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released the name of the victim but described him as a male in his mid-40s. No criminal charges have been filed in connection to the accident.

The KSAT report also notes that last year in Texas alone there were 17,000 crashes in work-zones that resulted in 115 fatalities.

Work-Zone Crash Facts

The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates there were 87,606 work-zone crashes nationwide in 2010 accounting for 1.6% of all roadway crashes. Fatal crashes were relatively rare, with fatalities occurring in only 0.6% of work-zone crashes. About 30% of work-zone crashes resulted in personal injury and another 69% resulted in property damage only.
