Nick Naughton3 years ago

On Tuesday Oct. 1, a man was sentenced to six years in prison as a result from killing a bicyclist when he swerved off a highway after drinking.

About the San Antonio Bicylce Accident

According to the San Antonio Express-News, Ruben Nerio, 41, swerved off U.S 181 and slammed his truck into an oncoming cyclist after having taken multiple whiskey shots before driving. Eluterio Borrego, 53, was killed on impact as he was riding along a shoulder against traffic. Nerio fled the scene shortly after, but police found his battered company vehicle which tested positive for DNA of Borrego.

Drunk Driver Accepts Plea Bargain

  • A friend of Nerio described how she witnessed him take multiple whiskey shots and drink Budweiser at Brooks Pub shortly before the accident.
  • Nerio was charged with failure to stop and render aid after a wreck that caused death, which is a third-degree felony. He pleaded no contest before agreeing to a plea bargain.
  • Bexar county statistics show San Antonio saw 7,649 total DWI arrests in 2013, with blood draws in 3,364 of those cases and 15 intoxication manslaughter convictions.
