San Antonio Teen Avoids Felony Charges in Accident that Killed 2

According to the San Antonio Express News teen driver originally charged with two counts of felony manslaughter for his role in an auto accident that killed a mother and her son has been found guilty of two counts of misdemeanor reckless driving.

About the Fatal San Antonio Car Accident

  • Teen driver Colton James Conner, now 21, was driving along a rural road in Bexar County when he swerved into oncoming traffic killing Elizabeth Estrada, 43, and her son Steven, 7.
  • The driver traveling in front of Conner testified that Conner attempted to pass him on the two lane road, then overcorrected and lost control after abandoning the attempt to pass.
  • As a result of the accident, Conner was charged with two counts of manslaughter carrying up to 20 years in prison.

San Antonio Jury Finds Driver Guilty of Reckless Driving

  • During the trial, an accident reconstruction expert hired by the defense acknowledged that Conner was speeding, stating he was traveling 68 mph to 73 mph in the 60 mph zone.
  • The expert for the prosecution testified that Connor could have been traveling as fast as 94 mph and calculated that his car was still traveling 81 mph at the point of impact.
  • After two days of deliberation, the jury found Conner guilty of two counts of misdemeanor reckless driving and not guilty for the two counts of felony manslaughter.
  • In lieu of prison, Conner will face 30 days in jail and two $200 fines.
