A pedestrian was killed in San Marcos Tuesday when he was struck by an 18-wheeler.

About the San Marcos Pedestrian Accident

According to KVUE, a 52-year-old man from Lockhart was hit by a tractor-trailer in San Marcos, Texas on Tuesday.

Abner Dean Branch was allegedly walking on the right shoulder of southbound Interstate 35 railroad overpass when the vehicle struck him just before 2 p.m. The accident occurred between Highway 80 and Highway 82.

Branch died as a result of the accident while the driver of the vehicle did not sustain any injuries. As a result, traffic was reduced to one southbound lane for over an hour while emergency responders cleared the scene.

The driver is not being charged; however, the San Marcos Police Department Collision Investigation Team is still investigating the accident.

Information About Pedestrian Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provided the following data.

  • In 2012, 4,743 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 76,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States.
  • We can expect one pedestrian will be injured every 8 minutes and one will die every 2 hours in a traffic crash this year, if statistics remain the same.
  • Only 60% of pedestrians said they expected drivers to stop when they were in crosswalks, even though they have the right-of-way.
  • 2 in 3 pedestrians (70%) who died were at non-intersections.
