Sanitation Worker Injured in Wreck with Two Garbage Trucks
About the Garbage Truck Accident
Police from Nassau County told reporters the accident occurred at approximately 9:25 a.m. on Friday at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Chestnut Avenue in East Meadow, N.Y. A garbage truck struck a second sanitation truck after attempting to swerve around a third vehicle uninvolved the wreck. A worker on the back of one of the trucks was fatally injured in the resulting collision.
The worker, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where he later died.
The intersection and immediate area was closed for about four hours while police investigated.
Sanitation Worker Injury Facts
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) observes that the largest portion of sanitation worker injuries occur among those whose jobs involved transportation and material moving. Although this group of workers consists of 46% of sanitation workers, they recorded approximately 75% of all occupational injuries and illnesses in the waste industry.
Most commonly, these workers sustained injuries involving contact with objects and equipment or overexertion. Moreover, there are 85 fatalities each year in the entire waste industry.
