School Bus Accident Leaves Fourteen Students Injured

WCNC reports fourteen students and a bus driver were injured in a school bus accident in southeast Charlotte, North Carolina. Officials are still investigating what caused the accident.

About the School Bus Accident

Two large tow trucks were used to remove the bus and the car involved in the accident that occurred around 8:45 a.m. on May 31 on Briar Dale Drive.

23 Randolph Middle School students were on the bus at the time of the accident; fortunately, none of the injuries are considered to be life-threatening.

Preliminary reports said that after turning a corner, the bus went off the road and crashed down an embankment. The bus then collided into the deck of a house. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • Between 2004 and 2013, a total of 340,039 traffic-related deaths were recorded in the United States.
  • 1,214 of those fatalities were linked directly to school-transportation-related crashes – an average of roughly 130 deaths per year.
  • Non-occupants (pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.) accounted for 21-percent of school-transportation-related fatalities.
