Senators Press for Additional Takata Recalls

Abi Reyes1 year ago

U.S. senators are pressuring Japanese auto supplier Takata Corp to recall all vehicles containing the company's Takata air bags.

About the Air Bag Recall

According to U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Edward Markey of Massachusetts, the reason for the recall of Takata air bags is defective inflators and propellant devices can cause the air bags deploy improperly in the event of a crash.

This may cause the air bags to rupture, shooting of metal fragments to throughout vehicle cabins. There have been several reports of these metal fragments injuring or even killing car occupants.

NBC News reports the senators began pushing for a recall following an incident in June when a 2015 Volkswagen ruptured in a Takata side air bag. According to the senators, all previous recalls have been limited to frontal air bags.

Description of Air Bag Recall

  • About 34 million vehicles are being recalled in the U.S. while 7 million are recalled worldwide.
  • The defective air bags have been connected with at least eight deaths and more than 100 injuries.
  • Originally, only six types of vehicles were recalled in April 2013, but a Toyota recall in June 2015 prompted more automakers to issue a recall.
  • Toyota says there have been no related injuries or deaths involving its vehicles.
  • The airbags were installed in cars from model year 2002 through 2008.
