Seven people were hospitalized for injuries Monday after an Amtrak passenger train derailed in central Vermont.

About the Amtrak Derailment

According to Reuters, the train was carrying 98 passengers and four crewmembers when it hit debris from a rockslide and derailed. One crewmember was taken to the hospital with serious injuries the other six were taken to the hospital with less severe injuries.

Photos of the crash show a train pressed up against a pile of rocks and other photos show train cars that rolled down an embankment.

The Federal Railroad Association is set to investigate the incident.

Press for Additional Safety Measures

Lawmakers are focused on increasing train safety following a series of derailment that have occurred over the past year.

On May 12, 2015 there was another derailment of an Amtrak train near Philadelphia. Eight people were killed, and more than 200 people were injured.

In February, there was a collision between a Metro-North Railroad train and another vehicle killing six people.
