Sleepy Drivers as Dangerous as Drunk Drivers?

Ruben Tyler Kendrick4 years ago

A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that drivers who were drunk or sleepy were twice as likely to be in a crash as sober and well rested drivers.

In other experimental studies, scientists have found that four hours of sleep loss a night could impair you as much as a six pack and losing an entire night of sleep is equivalent to having a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.19.

Fatigued Driver Study Findings

At Centre Hospitalo-Universitare de Bordeaux in France, researchers looked at 679 drivers who were admitted to a hospital in France after a serious accident from 2007 to 2009. The drivers filled out a questionnaire that took note of how much they had to drink, how sleepy they were, and what medications they were on before the accident occurred. The study found that drinking alcohol and lack of sleep were both associated with an increased risk of causing an accident. The study did have some limitations though because it is hard to track how tired people are since the questionnaires are subjective.

Tips for Staying Awake Behind the Wheel

  • DO- take a quick nap before getting behind the wheel of a car.
  • DO- drink coffee or another caffeinated beverage before driving. It is not guaranteed to keep you awake but could help.
  • DON’T– depend on techniques such as turning the stereo or air conditioning up. These have proven to be ineffective in the long term.
  • DON’T– drive while sleepy, intoxicated, or otherwise impaired.
