Soft Drinks Linked to Poorer Kidney Function

Destiny Baker3 years ago

FOX News has reported on two studies that suggest soft drinks may impede kidney function.

Soft Drinks and Proteinuria

  • In one study, researchers with Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan observed the effects of soft drinks on university employees.
  • In the study, the roughly 8,000 employees were divided into three groups:

    • The first group of 3,579 employees did not drink soft drinks.
    • The second group of 3,055 employees drank one soft drink a day.
    • The third group of 1,342 employees drank two soft drinks a day.
  • Though all employees participating in the study had normal kidney function before study began, a 2.9 year follow-up determined that approximately 10.7 percent of those who drank two soft drinks a day developed proteinuria (and indicator of kidney dysfunction.)
  • 8.9 percent of those who drank one soft drink a day developed proteinuria and 8.4 percent of employees who did not drink soft drinks developed the condiction.

Soft Drinks and Salt Regulation

  • In a second study carried out by Case Western Research University, researchers observed the effects of fructose consumptions in rats.
  • The study determined that rates that consumed fructose became more sensitive to the protein that helps to regulate salt.
  • The researchers theorize that this protein sensitivity may lead to serious health conditions including kidney failure, hypertension and obesity, all of which carry an increased risk of death.
