St. Joseph Man Dies in Farming Accident

An Indiana farmer was killed this weekend after he fell into a machine while working on his father’s ranch in Wakarusa.

Details About the Farming Accident in St. Joseph County

According to WNDU News in St. Joseph, Indiana, police have finally released the name of a man from Bremen who was killed this weekend in a farming accident.

The accident happened at a farm on the 13000 block of Osborne Road around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. 60-year-old Gary Schmeltz died from a severe traumatic injury.

The St. Joseph County Deputy Coroner Nancy Pemberton said that Schmeltz was killed after he got caught in a PTO behind the tractor while doing work on his father’s farm in Wakarusa. Reports say the man died instantly, however, the exact cause of death is still under investigation by the St. Joseph County Coroner.

Schmeltz’s father found him after the accident had already happened and called police.
