A Massachusetts State Trooper was killed in a car crash in Mass Pike.

Details about the Fatal Accident

Multiple sources are reporting that a Massachusetts State police trooper who was initially injured in a car accident on the Massachusetts Turnpike, has died.

44-year-old Thomas Clardy was killed on Wednesday.

According to police, Clardy had stopped another vehicle for a traffic violation when his police cruiser was hit by another vehicle at around noon in Charlton. Officer Clardy was then transported to the UMass Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Massachusetts police have said that 30-year-old David Njuguana, of Webster, has been charged by order of criminal summons with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and with a marked lanes violation. Njuguana was also sent to the hospital with serious injuries.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund indicates that there were thousands wrongful deaths of police fatalities during the ten year period from 2005-2014:

  • From 2005-2014, there were a total of 1,466 officer fatalities while on duty in the United States.
  • 414 of those officer fatalities during the same time period happened due to a traffic accident.
  • In 2014 alone, there were a total of 117 police officer fatalities.
