Sticky Scenarios- Delivery Driver Insurance

susan_harr5 years ago

Delivering food, newspapers, or running business errands can be a great way for teens to earn fast cash in their spare time, but beware- without proper insurance the price of delivery may be higher than you think. In many cases, using a car for commercial purposes voids the insurance policy, leaving you and your child uncovered in the case of an auto accident.

Non-Owned Auto Insurance Policies

Companies that employ delivery drivers who use their own vehicles are required to purchase Non-Owned Auto Insurance. This type of insurance covers:

  • Property damages
  • Damages to other vehicles
  • Medical expenses (for the driver, passengers, the other drivers, and their passengers)

Personal Auto Insurance Policies

While the employer is required to have a policy in place to protect drivers and certain damaged property, it is up to the delivery driver to purchase a policy that will protect his/her vehicle. Most insurance plans purchased by individuals are referred to as “personal auto insurance policies.” This means they cover personal use- not commercial use- of the vehicle. So if you have a basic personal auto insurance policy and you file a claim for an accident that occurred while the driver was making a delivery, your claim will likely be denied.

Before Letting Your Teen Behind the Wheel

  1. Ensure that your child’s employer has insurance to cover your child in the event he/she is involved in an automobile accident while working.
  2. Call your insurance agent and ask about all possible exclusions to your policy and, if necessary, purchase the additional coverage you need to cover damages to your vehicle.
