Students Injured in Virginia School Bus Accident

Fire and rescue teams in Virginia were called to the scene of an accident involving a school bus on Wednesday afternoon.

Details about the School Bus Accident

WHSV News is reporting that Augusta County Emergency Dispatchers have confirmed that a crash involving a school bus happened on Wednesday afternoon.

A source at the hospital confirmed that after they received word of the school bus accident, they were told to expect many patients to be transported to the hospital. The school system told WHSV News that the bus was transporting students from Wilson Middle School and Wilson High School when the accident happened.

In total, there were 14 students that were taken to the hospital after the accident.

The incident occurred just after 3:30 p.m., when the bus from the Augusta Country Public Schools was traveling north along Route 68, when the driver somehow lost control of the bus and it went off the right side of the road. After going off the right side of the road, the bus then crossed back over the road and hit an embankment before running off the left side of the road and continuing down a ravine and hitting a tree.

At the time of the accident, the bus was carrying 34 students.

The bus driver was charged with failure to maintain control of the vehicle.

  • Between the years of 2003-2012, there were 89 fatal accidents in which at least one of the occupants of the school transportation vehicle was killed.
  • From 2003-2012, there were a total of 174 fatalities of school-age children in accidents involving school-transportation vehicles.
  • There are an average of 135 school-transportation related fatalities every year in the United States.
