Study- Herbs Beat Drugs for Osteoarthritis

susan_harr5 years ago

A new study indicates that herbal remedies may provide better treatment for osteoarthritis than traditional pain medications, Fox News is reporting. The study, which was presented at the World Congress on Osteoarthritis in San Diego, found that Rhulief (a combination of turmeric root and boswellia extracts) was more effective at relieving osteoarthritis pain in the knee when compared with the prescription drug celecoxib (Celebrex).

Traditionally, people suffering from osteoarthritis use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and Celebrex to treat symptoms. While these medications are proven to help relieve pain, they can also cause liver and kidney damage, and have been shown to increase a user's risk of heart attack and stroke.

About the Study

  • Conducted at the Anugraha Medical Center in Kochin, India.
  • Included 28 patients aged 18 to 65 years who were suffering from osteoarthritis.
  • Patients were split into two groups and given either Celebrex or Rhulief for 12 weeks.
  • After 12 weeks, 93% of those who took Rhulief could walk more than 1,000 meters compared to 86% who took Celebrex.
  • 93% of patients who took Rhulief reported less pain or no pain compared to 79% who took Celebrex.
