Study Shows Devastating Effects of Head Injuries

A recent study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) highlights the long-term effects that repeated head injuries can have on athletes.

The study revealed that NFL legend Junior Seau suffered from a degenerative brain disease when he took his own life last May. Seau was a linebacker for 20 seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2009.

NFL Player Junior Seau Had Brain Disease (CTE)

Fox News is reporting that the NIH study found Seau’s brain similar to that of a person who has suffered repeated head injuries. The former NFL player was found to have had several brain abnormalities that pointed to a brain disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Seau is not the only football player linked to CTE. Boston University’s Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy reported that 43 former football players, 34 professionals and 9 who never played past college were also diagnosed with CTE.

Head Trauma Caused Change in Seau’s Behavior

According to Seau’s ex-wife and son, Seau’s behavior changed as a result of his numerous sports injuries, which included many repeated concussions. Changes included:

  • wild mood swings
  • forgetfulness
  • irrationality
  • insomnia
  • depression
Former NFL Players and Families Sue the NFL

Seau is not the only NFL player to have committed suicide only to have it discovered later that he had CTE. Dave Duerson underwent a similar experience, and his family has filed a wrongful death suit against the NFL. They believe the league did not work hard enough to prevent or treat the numerous concussions that severely impaired Duerson’s brain.

Ray Easterling also suffered from CTE after his career. He killed himself last April after battling dementia, depression, and insomnia. His wife is one of the plaintiffs who have decided to sue the NFL.
