susan_harr5 years ago

A recent study, published in the journal Biological Psychology, found that even mild brain trauma may lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other anxiety disorders.

Details of the Brain Injury Study

  • The study was led by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles and funded by the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense and the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center.
  • It was published Feb. 15 in the in the journal Biological Psychology.
  • Researchers studied rats and found that the rodents showed more susceptibility to fear stimuli after experiencing traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  • They concluded that a TBI, even mild, can lead to anxiety disorders including PTSD.

“Something about the brain injury rendered [the rats] more susceptible to acquiring an inappropriately strong fear. It was as if the injury primed the brain for learning to be afraid,” study authors.
