The Department of Health for the state of Hawaii is investigating outbreaks of hepatitis and liver failure through the use of supplements used for weight lose or muscle/mass gain.

According to the DOH of Hawaii, at least 10 cases of acute liver failure have been reported from May 2013 through September 2013. No infectious causes have been identified as investigators say these cases are occurring through the usage of dietary or nutritional supplements.
Liver Failures May Be Sign of Heptaitis Outbreak
- Researchers and investigators say they are still working on an exact cause of these outbreaks, but are concerned at a possible link to hepatitis.
- The DOH has issued a statewide Medical Advisory to all medical departments in order to help identify more causes.
- The department wishes people who are using supplements to use them carefully and under the supervision of a clinician or healthcare provider.
- Symptoms include abdominal pain or discomfort, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and/or vomiting, and yellow skin or eyes.
