Suspect Arrested in Fatal Dallas Hit-and-Run

Tina Robinson3 years ago

Police have arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run accident in North Dallas that left a 7-year-old girl dead last week.

About the Hit-and-Run

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that police arrested Julius Sears, 29, on Wednesday night at a Garland, TX motel where Sears was plotting an escape to New Orleans. Sears has been charged with a second-degree felony of causing a fatal accident and has bail set at $250,000.

Reports say that 7-year-old Melanny Valdez was struck and killed by a car Tuesday evening while attempting to cross Hemlock Avenue near Park Lane. Witnesses chased a black 2008 Chrysler sedan.

Police were able to trace the vehicle back to the lot where it was purchased which eventually led to Sears.

Authorities questioned Sears earlier on Wednesday, who admitted to driving the vehicle but said that he was unaware that he had hit Valdez. A later tip led investigators to the Garland motel where Sears was planning to escape.

Authorities are looking into why Sears was not arrested initially when questioned in connection with the hit-and-run accident.
