Two people have been killed as a result of a tanker explosion just south of Zavalla, Texas.

Details About the Explosion in Texas

KTRE News is reporting that two people have died after a wrecking involving a fuel truck that exploded after it collided with a smaller pickup on US Highway 69 just south of Zavalla.

The explosion happened at about 6:17 a.m. on Friday, when first responders were dispatched to the area of FM 1270 where the tanker and the pickup truck collided.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is working to identify the victims.

According to the Zavalla Fire Department Incident Commander Richard Brunk, the truck was carrying crude oil and the fire had the potential to be a lot worse than it actually was, but that the truck was able to vent itself out of a rupture that happened in the tank at the top of the truck.

Emergency crews from four different cities responded to the scene of the accident to help extinguish the flames. Getting enough water to the scene of the accident to extinguish the flames was the biggest obstacle. A HAZMAT team was also on scene for precautionary reasons.

Initial reports from the investigation indicate that the pickup truck was headed north on US Highway 69 when it crossed over into the lanes of oncoming traffic and hit the semi-trailer head-on.
