Teacher Killed in Head-On Collision on Texas 71

A Lake Travis High School teacher was killed in a car crash on her way to school Thursday morning, reports the Austin American-Statesman.

Details of the Fatal Accident

According to Austin-Travis County EMS, Ginger Johnson, a long time chemistry teacher at the high school died in a head-on collision with another motorist on n Texas 71 west of Austin, between Bee Cave Road and Southwest Parkway.

Johnson died at the scene and the passengers in the other vehicle, a woman in her 40s and a child, were transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge with potentially serious injuries.

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,534 people were killed in auto accidents in Texas in 2014 – an 3.7-percent increase over the 3,408 deaths recorded in 2013.
  • 1,974 of the 2014 deaths were attributed to accidents that occurred in rural areas of the state and 581 deaths were attributed to head-on collisions.
  • An additional 237,941 people were injured in auto accidents in Texas in 2014, averaging to one injury every 2 minutes and 13 seconds.
  • A reportable crash was estimated to have occurred every 66 seconds.
