According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Tea Company Teavana has agreed to pay a $3.75 million civil penalty to the federal government after not reporting a hazardous defect in their glass tumblers.

About the Civil Penalty Imposed on Teavana

According to federal law, companies are supposed to report known hazards in their products to the CPSC. Teavana had known that the defects in the tumblers could cause a substantial product hazard and that consumers were at risk of serious injury after several complaints were reported.

There were six reports of injuries to consumers who suffered from burns and cuts to their fingers due to the shattered glass.

Failing to report these incidents to the CPSC was what led to the civil penalty, although the tumblers were actually recalled in 2013.

What This Means for Teavana

Even after the tumblers were recalled, Teavana still faces repercussions.  According to the CPSC, Teavana has agreed to comply with and maintain the compliance program of its parent company that is designed to ensure compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA) and regulations enforced by the Commission.

The company will now have to adhere to strict guidelines which will ensure that they are reporting all necessary information to the CPSC.
