A teenager has been arrested in connection with a fatal accident in Sarasota.

Details about the Fatal Sarasota Accident

Bay News 9 is reporting that troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol have arrested a 16-year-old that was involved in a fatal accident on Tuesday morning on Interstate 75 south in Sarasota.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Lakewood Ranch teenager has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death, as well as a violation of his learner’s license restriction. At the time of the accident, a tanker truck was loaded with about 8,500 gallons of gasoline was heading south along Interstate 75 just before 4:30 am.

The teenager was driving in the same lane in front of the tanker. According to investigators, the tanker hit the back end of the teenager’s vehicle before it veered into the grass shoulder, overturned, and burst into flames.

The driver of the truck, 53-year-old Robert Drewelus, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Troopers have said that the teenager driver left the scene of the accident, but they later found his vehicle at an apartment complex. The teen was found at his home in Lakewood Ranch and taken into custody at about 7 a.m.

An investigation into the accident remains ongoing.
