Teen Driver Killed in School Bus Collision

17-year-old Whitney Westmoreland was killed last week when her SUV crashed into a school bus in Claremore, Oklahoma.

Details of the Fatal Crash

The crash happened around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning when Whitney Westmoreland overcorrected and hit the school bus. Investigators say that the bus was carrying 40 students between pre-K and 12th grade.

According to officials, only two students on the bus were injured. FOX23 later learned that a mother pulled her child from school after complaints of neck pain.

Westmoreland was a student at Claremore-Sequoya High School. Her mother is also a teacher at the school.

The Superintendent of Sequoyah Public Schools released this statement about the crash and said the counselors would be made available to students.

  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there have been 1,353 people killed in school-transportation-related crashes—an average of 135 fatalities per year.
  • Occupants of school transportation vehicles accounted for 8 percent of the fatalities, and nonoccupants (pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.) accounted for 21 percent of the fatalities.
  • Most (71%) of the people who lost their lives in these crashes were occupants of other vehicles involved.
