Teen Hit, Killed While Changing Tire in TN

According to WSMV NBC 4, a Tennessee teen was killed Thursday afternoon after he was struck by a hit-and-run car while changing the tire of a vehicle on a highway shoulder.

Details of the Hit-and-Run

Authorities say Clifton Braunwalder, 13, was killed after a vehicle struck him on Thursday afternoon on I-24 in Smyrna, TN. Braunwalder, his mother Sondra S. Braunwalder, 47, and sister Louann, 12, were standing behind a Chevrolet Cavalier on the side of the highway changing a tire when a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero struck and killed Clifton. His mother was also injured in the accident.

Friday morning police arrested Tina L. Wilson on charges of vehicular homicide and aggrevated vehicular assault in connect with the hit-and-run accident. Wilson was initially charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident. She was released later Friday morning on bond.

Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

A 10-year study of pedestrian fatalities conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides the following statistics.

  • One in five pedestrian fatalities is the result of hit-and-run accidents.
  • Highways with speeds of 50mph and higher have the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities.
  • In less than 10% of fatal pedestrian accidents were drivers speeding.
  • Approximately two thirds of pedestrian fatalities occur in urban areas.
