Teen Struck and Killed by Distracted Driver

A 15-year-old was hit and killed by a distracted driver on Saturday as he walked along the side of a highway in St. Marys, Georgia.

About the Fatal St. Marys Pedestrian Accident

According to First Coast News, Braxton Sullivan was walking along St. Marys Road near Interstate 95 when he was struck by a car and killed.

The teen lived at a boys’ home and was in the process of being adopted by David and Sue Murrell. The couple had checked Sullivan out of the boys’ home for the weekend – he was due back Monday.

The driver of the car, Rubin O’Neil Mainor of Jacksonville, informed police that he was reaching for his cell phone when the accident occurred. Mainor called 911 and remained on the scene.

The accident is still under investigation.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Following information provided by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center:

  • 4,743 pedestrians and 726 bicyclists were killed in traffic collisions in 2012.
  • An additional 76,000 pedestrian injuries were reported for the year  – nearly one injury every 7 minutes.
  • Men accounted for 69 percent of pedestrian fatalities recorded in 2012.
  • 32 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred between 8:00 pm and midnight.
