Texas Authorities Investigate Fatal Trucking Accident

The Texas Department of Safety is investigating a fatal 18-wheeler crash that left one man dead Tuesday morning.

About the Fatal Trucking Accident

According to reports from NBC 6 News, one man was killed following a trucking accident on Interstate 20 in Harrison County.

Authorities believe the man exited his tractor-trailer when the vehicle caught fire. He then ran onto a nearby service road where he was fatally struck by another semi.

Authorities are unsure what caused the man’s semi to catch fire. The identity of the man is being withheld at this time.

U.S. Trucking Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • In 2012, 3,921 fatalities were linked to crash involving large trucks.
  • This marked a 4-percent increase from the 3,781 deaths recorded in 2011.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents in 2012:
    • 697 were occupants of large trucks
    • 2,843 were occupants of other vehicles
    • 381 were non-occupants including bicyclists and pedestrians
  • Another 104,000 people were injured in trucking accidents in 2012.
