A Texas man was killed in a crash at the Kansas International Dragway.

Details about the Dragway Accident

KWCH News is reporting that a drag racer from Texas was killed after witnesses reported that the vehicle he was driving went off the track at the Kansas International Dragway traveling at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.

A relative of the victim confirmed the death of Jason Lumpkin, of Fort Worth, Texas.

The accident happened at about 1:30 p.m. Lumpkin was taken to Via Christi at St. Francis in critical condition. Witnesses at the scene of the accident say the vehicle may have been traveling in excess of 150 miles per hour when the vehicle began to roll.

There was another accident that was reported in the same spot where Lumpkin lost control of his vehicle. After crossing the finish line, there was less traction on the roadway, which caused the vehicle to lose control and flip several times.

Important Information about Drag Racing

According to the Charlotte Observer, there are hundreds of wrongful deaths of race car drivers and spectators that have happened over the last 25 years in the United States:

  • In the 25 years leading up to 2014, there were about 520 people who were killed in the United States in auto racing accidents.
  • Two out of every three fatalities in auto racing over the three years leading up to 2014 happened at a short track – which have been slow to embrace new rules and changes being implemented in the major leagues.
  • 53 percent of auto racing fatalities from 1990-2014 happened at short tracks.
