Texas Prison Bus Hit by Train

Media outlets are reported at least 10 deaths following a Texas accident in which a prison bus carrying 15 occupants was struck by a train on Wednesday.

Details of the Fatal Train Accident

Reuters reports 12 inmates and three corrections officers were on the bus at the time of the accident.

The bus was traveling to El Paso from Abiline when it veered of a highway and crossed in front of a train in Odessa. The Odessa American reports the bus may have driven off a bridge passing over the railroad tracks.

Officials have reported at least 10 deaths, but did not elaborate on how many of the deceased were prisoners and how many were corrections officers. Details concerning other injuries have not been released.

Train Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by Operation Lifesaver: Rail Safety Education:

  • In 2013, there were 2,087 reported railroad collisions resulting in 251 deaths and 929 injuries.
  • This marked an increase over 2012 when 1,971 accidents and 232 fatalities were recorded.
  • 50 percent of railroad crashes occur within five miles of a motorist’s home. 75 percent occur within 25 miles.
  • A motorist is 20 times more likely to die in a crash involving a train than a crash involving another vehicle.
