Texas Teen Dies in ATV Accident
Details of the Fatal ATV Accident
Hergert was camping with friends roughly 50 miles east of Lufkin when she was involved in an ATV accident.
Preliminary reports incidicate Herger and two other teens, Bryce Hoffpauir, 18, and Nicholas Fesmire, 19, were traveling in the ATV when the vehicle lost control. Hergert was thrown from the vehicle, sustaining traumatic head injuries.
Authorities pronounced Herger dead at the scene. The other two occupants suffered only minor injuries.
While TxDPS initially stated it was to early to speculate whether drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor to the accident, a post on Hergert’s twitter account indicated the group had “160 beers.”
Investigators are now working to determine how the teens came to possess such a large quantity of alcohol.

- CPSC received 426 reports of ATV-related fatalities in 2013.
- Between 1982 and 2013, ATV accidents resulted in the deaths of 3,023 children under the age of 16.
- 99,600 people were treated in emergency rooms for injuries sustained in ATV-related accidents in 2013.
