Three Dead in Tilden Trucking Accident

Three people have been killed in a head-on collision between an 18-wheeler and a pickup truck outside of Tilden, Texas.

About the Fatal Tilden Trucking Collision

According to Kiii News, the accident occurred Sunday afternoon along Highway 72.

Early reports indicate that the accident occurred when tractor-trailer veered into oncoming traffic, striking the pickup.

The impact caused the truck to flip over, ejecting the driver and a passenger – both died instantly. A third passenger was found dead inside the truck.

The driver of the 18 wheeler was hospitalized and is currently listed in stable condition.

  • According the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, 4,018 people were killed in commercial vehicle accidents in 2011 – 3,757 people in large truck accidents and 283 in bus accidents.
  • These numbers are up from 3,957 deaths attributed to commercial vehicle accidents in 2010 and 3,619 in 2009.
  • Additionally, 88,000 people were injured in commercial vehicle accidents involving buses and large trucks in 2011.
  • 2012 data from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that the upward trend is continuing with 3,921 deaths linked to large truck accidents alone – up 4 percent from 2011.
  • 83 percent of those killed in large truck accidents in 2012 were occupants of other vehicles or non-occupants (pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.).
