Three Pedestrians Seriously Injured in Connecticut Accident

Newington, Conn. police are investigating a pedestrian-vehicle accident that happened on Tuesday afternoon, according to News8 WTNH. Three pedestrians were seriously injured in the accident.

About the Newington Pedestrian Accident

  • Police told reporters the accident happened at 1:15 p.m. on Christian Lane near Kelsey Street in Newington, Conn.
  • Three pedestrians were crossing the street when a green pickup truck struck the group. The victims were described as a mother, grandmother, and grandson. Witnesses said the mother was pregnant.
  • The truck attempted to flee but was stopped by a white van about 100 yards from the accident.

Two of the victims were taken to St. Francis Hospital; the third victim was taken to Hartford Hospital. All three are reported as having non-life-threatening injuries and are in serious to stable condition.

Investigators will look at whether or not the crosswalk light was functioning properly at the time of the accident.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 4,280 pedestrian fatalities and approximately 70,000 pedestrian injuries in the U.S. in 2010. When averaged out that equaled to one pedestrian injury every eight minutes, and one pedestrian death every two hours. The CDC also notes that pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than a passenger vehicle occupant to be killed in a car crash.
