Tire Blowout Results in 5 Deaths, 4 Injuries

Five people are dead and four children are injured following a single-vehicle accident near Austin, Texas. Investigators believe the wreck was caused by a tire blowout.

Details of the Tragic Accident

According to KVUE, at least five people are dead following a tragic single-vehicle accident along State Highway 130 last Thursday.

The accident happened at 8 a.m. when the vehicle rolled into a ditch following a tire blowout. The speed limit in that area is 85 mph, but the speed at which the vehicle was driving at is still unknown.

A total of 9 people were in the white 4 door SUV. Everyone was ejected, and four were people pronounced dead at the scene. Five children were seriously injured, including one child who died at the hospital on Friday.  

The ages of those injured range from infant to 15-years-old. No one was wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred.

Dell Children’s Hospital confirmed Wednesday that one of the children involved, age 5, remains in a coma after suffering severe brain trauma, and a 2-year-old is paralyzed from the waist down due to a back injury.

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,408 traffic fatalities were recorded in 2013 – one death every 2 hours and 34 minutes.
  • 1,887 of those deaths were associated with accident that occurred in rural areas of the state and 1,347 were attributed to single-vehicle crashes.
  • Of all those killed in traffic-collisions in 2013, 44.9 percent were not restrained at the time of the collision.
